Of all the many historic buildings in Wernigerode, Krummel’s House stands out from the crowd. Its unique façade ornamentation sets it apart from all other buildings. It is completely covered with exquisite woodcarvings, from the doorstep right up to the eaves.The house was built in the year 1674 by the corn trader Heinrich Krummel. The wood reliefs were made some years earlier. To the far right on the second floor there used to be a door that served as a hatchway. Above it, there was a platform with a hoist, so that the trader’s corn could easily be carried up to the granary on the upper floor. The windows here were fitted with wooden grilles for better ventilation...
